November 2011 User of the Month: Jin-Ho Yoon

For November's User of the Month, I’m happy to announce that we have selected Jin-Ho Yoon from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Who he is: Jin-Ho is a scientist in the Fundamental and Computational Sciences Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Why we picked him: Jin-Ho has transferred over 68TBs of data since Apr 2011. In the last month alone, he has transferred more than 27TBs of data spread across 60,000 files. In one instance, he was able to transfer ~1.9TBs of data from ORNL to NERSC in about 100 minutes, achieving an average throughput of over 2.4 Gbps. Jin-Ho's use case is an excellent example of how Globus Online can be used to move data rapidly and reliably between an institution that has GridFTP infrastructure in place and an institution that does not. He was able to trivially setup the one-click Globus Connect software on the endpoint that did not have a GridFTP server installed and start moving data. Even though typical GridFTP optimizations such as parallel streams cannot be used when Globus Connect is used as the destination, Jin-Ho was able to achieve high rates -- as high as 700Mbps for Globus Connect destinations -- thanks to Globus Online's auto-tuning and concurrency optimizations. Congratulations Jin-Ho, and thanks for your continued use of Globus Online and Globus Connect for your data movement needs.
